President of the Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA), Mr. Charles Asibey, has applauded Nigeria’s landmark decision to include armwrestling as a demonstration sport at the upcoming 22nd National Sports Festival, also known as the Gateway Games Ogun 2024. He described the move as a significant leap forward for the sport across the African continent.
The Nigeria Armwrestling Federation (NAWF) recently received approval from the National Sports Commission to showcase armwrestling at the festival, which is scheduled to take place from May 16 to 30 in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Reacting to this development, Mr. Asibey emphasized that the decision represents a collective win for Africa, not just Nigeria.
“This is not just Nigeria’s win—this is Africa’s victory. When a sporting powerhouse like Nigeria embraces armwrestling at a national level, it sends a strong message across the continent,” he stated.
He went on to commend the leadership of the National Sports Commission, giving special recognition to Chairman Mallam Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade for their visionary commitment to expanding sporting opportunities.
“Mallam Dikko and Hon. Olopade have demonstrated bold, future-focused leadership. Their decision doesn’t just empower Nigerian athletes—it inspires an entire continent,” Asibey added.
Also serving as the Vice President of the World Armwrestling Federation, Mr. Asibey acknowledged the fast-paced growth of the sport in Nigeria, crediting the efforts of Engr. Samuel Olatunji Jackson, President of the Nigeria Armwrestling Federation, for his leadership and drive.
He stressed that armwrestling’s inclusion in the Gateway Games would significantly boost its visibility and open doors for long-term policy changes that promote the sport across Africa.
“This isn’t just about strength—it’s about potential. Young talents from Lagos to Lusaka will now see armwrestling as more than just a contest—it’s a career path and a symbol of opportunity,” he remarked.
This year’s festival marks the first time armwrestling will be featured in the National Sports Festival as a demonstration sport. Stakeholders believe this inclusion is a strategic step toward full integration in future editions and a bold affirmation of Nigeria’s rising influence in the global armwrestling arena.
