In a major breakthrough for one of Nigeria’s rapidly growing sports, the Nigeria Armwrestling Federation (NAWF) has officially secured approval from the National Sports Commission to feature armwrestling at the 22nd National Sports Festival, also known as the “Gateway Games Ogun 2024”. The event will be held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, from May 16 to 30, 2024.
A Milestone for Armwrestling in Nigeria
The historic announcement was made by Mrs. Thecla Opara, Director of the National Sports Festival and Para Sports (NSFPS), and Secretary of the Main Organizing Committee (MOC). She confirmed that armwrestling has been granted a highly coveted demonstration slot during the festival, a moment that promises to elevate the sport to new heights in Nigeria.
A Triumph of Visionary Leadership
This approval represents the culmination of years of hard work and visionary leadership from Engr. Samuel Olatunji Jackson, President of the Nigeria Armwrestling Federation. Under his leadership, armwrestling has surged from the shadows to become Nigeria’s third most popular sport by 2024, thanks to its impressive performances at international competitions, including the African Games in Ghana.
An elated Engr. Jackson shared his excitement over the approval:
“We are deeply honored and thankful to the National Sports Commission, particularly Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, for recognizing the potential of armwrestling. This is a monumental step for the sport in Nigeria.”
